Barry Kendall.

The club is saddened to learn of the passing of Barry Kendall.

Barry passed away in the early hours of Saturday morning after a battle against ill health.
As Groundsman at the club for around 20 years he took huge personal pride in his role and creating an immaculate outfield. He was a grafter who cared about doing the job right. In 2019 Barry was awarded Honorary Life Membership by the club in recognition of his commitment as a volunteer on the ground and to Penrith Cricket Club.
Barry was one of life’s great characters and someone who was wonderful company, especially when a drink and sport were involved. On match days everyone knew where Barry would be - in Kendall’s Corner - the seat by the window in the Lounge Bar watching the cricket and sharing a beer and the craic with anyone and everyone. He was a great story teller and raconteur, who loved a laugh and the banter with sporting folk. Who can forget his singing and his ability to entertain with his “naughty” songs!
Barry could come across as stubborn and outspoken, but the reality was he was a gentle giant of a man with a heart of gold who absolutely loved his family and loved Penrith.
Ironically on the day of his death, England beat Sri Lanka in the 1st Test playing “Baz ball” and the 1st X1 pulled off one of the most amazing run chases even witnessed at Tynefield Park. We know exactly what Barry would have said - “well played Penrith, but tha cud av bowled better!”
The club and the town has lost a big personality.
RIP Barry
